ViziLite Oral Cancer Screening

Did you know that oral cancer claims one life in the US every hour on average? Only around half of the 34,000 new patients diagnosed in 2007 survived until 2012. With dramatic statistics like these, it may come as a surprise that we hear very little about this deadly disease in the media or from physicians. Because oral cancer is often detected in advanced stages, the mortality rate is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkins disease, and brain cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, and ovarian cancer. Treatment for oral cancer causes disfigurement and often lessens the patient’s quality of life dramatically. However, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, these high numbers can be decreased if oral cancer is diagnosed and treated this disease in earlier stages.

Thanks to the amazing new technology known as ViziLite, our team at Maspeth Dental can quickly and painlessly screen for oral cancer during every regular checkup. ViziLite is an identification and marking system that detects tissue abnormalities and can be used in combination with traditional visual exams.

All adults should have an annual ViziLite exam, even if they don’t participate in high-risk behaviors like tobacco use or excessive alcohol consumption; this is because nearly a quarter of oral cancer victims don’t participate in any risky lifestyle factors whatsoever. Men over 40 and women between the ages of 20 and 40 are the most prone to the disease. Patients with viral infections, autoimmune deficiencies like HIV, and diabetes may need more frequent evaluations.

Your screening here in Maspeth, NY will involve a few simple steps. First, we’ll rinse thoroughly with a cleansing solution. Then, our team will dim the overhead lights and examine your mouth using the ViziLite wand. If ViziLite finds a problem area, the spot is illuminated so that we can see whether it looks distinctly different from other, normal areas.

If oral cancer is found and treated in the early stages, patients have an 80 to 90% chance of their treatment being successful. Ask our Maspeth team about whether you may benefit from an oral cancer screening that includes ViziLite!
